Boston Public Gardens

This is a painting I did in acrylics, back in 1995, when I lived in Boston. I was still very much influenced back then by the pointillistic technique of Monet. I have since moved to oils, which are very rich and beautiful and allow glazes. /paintings

Still Life at the Art Students League

IMG_2375, originally uploaded by lionheart613.
My first still life painted at the Art Students League in New York with Pionk. Mr. Pionk was a master at pastels, and a true genius in still life. His touches are evident in this work. He personally added the little highlights to the apples. He always insisted on keeping highlights to a minimum, but placing them well. I was very saddened by his passing from lung cancer recently.

A tribute to my mother, I painted this from life. I had difficulty painting the hands and ended up using my own hands as a model, which I painted using a mirror. She points toward the bible, which she kept on her lap often

I painted this at the Art Students League at Peller's class. I especially enjoyed capturing the rich tonalities of the wood and the varying shades of grey and black.

Old New York Skyline

Low light near twilight creates intense hues of reds and oranges. This is the old New York of the Ash Can School of art. The lonely yet hauntingly beautiful scene is also reminiscent of Hopper. /New York

A Face Emerges

I had to go on manual focus to pierce the reflecting boutique window. The classic old brownstone works well with the mannequin. The red color of brick can be mistaken for hair.

Upper West Side Scene

Approaching the station at 72nd and Broadway, a young lady makes momentary eye contact with the lens. The 135 2.0 is almost magical in blurring out the distant scene of frenetic activity and replacing it with soft glowing tones of focal coloration. /people

Hands - A Portrait

A portrait need not be only of a face. Hands are amazingly expressive. An elderly man asleep on a crowded subway car. His hands show age, experience, and a lifetime of memories and feelings.

Top of the Steps

A moment in time, a stranger about to descend into the subway passes nonchalantly by a homeless man sitting at the subway entrance. Although we only see a leg, we can easily imagine the scenario - the stranger continues to walk by and the seated man is all but invisible, but not to me. /New York

I thank the followers of my blog worldwide for coming and joining the expedition. United States tops it, and then many followers in Canada, Brazil, Europe, Russia and Australia. Asia and Africa too, but fewer. To find your city, click on the Site Meter icon on the right hand panel and then go to world map.  Thank you all for visiting and I hope you come back soon! Steve

Autumnal Splendor

The young lady was caught in a moment of reflection. I used the Canon 70-200 f4 IS L lens. She was silhouetted against the brilliant setting, trees lit by the sun behind her. This created a most beautiful and warm hair light. I simply tweaked a drop with fill light in Lightroom to capture a touch of her expression.

Gay Pride Parade NYC

Bacchus (c.1595) by  Caravaggio (1571-1610) is held in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence.

The painting shows a youthful Bacchus reclining in classical fashion with grapes and vine leaves in his hair, fingering the drawstring of his loosely-draped robe. On a stone table in front of him is a bowl of fruit and a large carafe of red wine; with his left hand he holds out to the viewer a shallow goblet of the same wine, apparently inviting the viewer to join him.
Whether intentional or not, there is humour in this painting. The pink-faced Bacchus is an accurate portrayal of a half-drunk teenager dressed in a sheet and leaning on a mattress in the Cardinal's Rome palazzo, but far less convincing as a Graeco-Roman god. The fruit, because of the inedible condition of most of the items, is believed by the more serious-minded critics to signify the transience of worldly things. (Wikipedia/artist)

Village Halloween Parade

The youth, in his flowered attire is reminiscent of the self portrait by Caravaggio as Dionysius.

N.Y.F.D Dalmatian

Soho Nov 6 2010-7, originally uploaded by lionheart613.
Dedicated to New York's finest. In the 18th century, the Dalmatian was called a "coach dog" as it bonded well with horses and helped protect them, particularly against theft. Later when fire departments formed, the Dalmatian was often aboard the first horse-drawn equipment because it guarded the horses at the fire house. Today, we often see these spotted canines around because of tradition and the history of the fire service.

Emerging from the Darkness

Soho Nov 6 2010-56, originally uploaded by lionheart613.

Reminds me of a painting by Escher. People going up and down a staircase simultaneously. The French have a term, creative as they are, "l'esprit d'escalier", or the spirit of the escalator. L'esprit de l'escalier (staircase wit) is thinking of a clever comeback when it is too late. The phrase can be used to describe a riposte to an insult or any witty remark that comes to mind too late to be useful—after one has left the scene of the encounter. The phenomenon is usually accompanied by a feeling of regret at not having thought of it when it was most needed or suitable. How often have you passed someone on an escalator that you wanted to speak to, but only thought of what to say afterward. The moment is gone forever.
