Body painting at the Village Halloween Parade.
I invite you to embark on an ongoing photographic odyssey - one of exotic locales, colorful characters, strange customs and untold adventures. Not to be overshadowed, New York City, a microcosm of the world, pulsates with art, fashion and culture, with surprises and contradictions all its own. Long Island beckons too, from North Fork vineyards to South Shore beaches. I hope my paintings and photos inspire and inform. Marilyn
A tribute to my mother, I painted this from life. I had difficulty painting the hands and ended up using my own hands as a model, which I painted using a mirror. She points toward the bible, which she kept on her lap often
The Cellist
I painted this at the Art Students League at Peller's class. I especially enjoyed capturing the rich tonalities of the wood and the varying shades of grey and black.
The Fifteen Minute Portrait
This was taken during a workshop at ICP, the Fifteen Minute Portrait with David Turner. I used multiple strobe lights to create this powerful and evocative portrait.

She really knew how to pose. Soft blur of city lights in background is magical.

A Face Emerges
I had to go on manual focus to pierce the reflecting boutique window. The classic old brownstone works well with the mannequin. The red color of brick can be mistaken for hair.

Autumnal Splendor
The young lady was caught in a moment of reflection. I used the Canon 70-200 f4 IS L lens. She was silhouetted against the brilliant setting, trees lit by the sun behind her. This created a most beautiful and warm hair light. I simply tweaked a drop with fill light in Lightroom to capture a touch of her expression.

The youth, in his flowered attire is reminiscent of the self portrait by Caravaggio as Dionysius.

I painted this many years ago, at the Art Student's League, under the tutelage of Oldrich Tepley.
Graffiti Alley
An Alley on Lafayette Street. Colorful art on brick walls complemented by green aluminum. Like a prison, the playground of urban decay is barred.

Emerging from the Darkness
Reminds me of a painting by Escher. People going up and down a staircase simultaneously. The French have a term, creative as they are, "l'esprit d'escalier", or the spirit of the escalator. L'esprit de l'escalier (staircase wit) is thinking of a clever comeback when it is too late. The phrase can be used to describe a riposte to an insult or any witty remark that comes to mind too late to be useful—after one has left the scene of the encounter. The phenomenon is usually accompanied by a feeling of regret at not having thought of it when it was most needed or suitable. How often have you passed someone on an escalator that you wanted to speak to, but only thought of what to say afterward. The moment is gone forever.
Incoming Train
Like figures from the Matrix, two blonds in red coats present repeating patterns. The train is a blur of motion, highlighted by the stolidity of the platform.
