Dedicated to New York's finest. In the 18th century, the Dalmatian was called a "coach dog" as it bonded well with horses and helped protect them, particularly against theft. Later when fire departments formed, the Dalmatian was often aboard the first horse-drawn equipment because it guarded the horses at the fire house. Today, we often see these spotted canines around because of tradition and the history of the fire service.
