New York

Olana

The residence of Frederic Edwin Church. It is a magnificent Persian themed mansion.

http://www.olana.org/

Church gained fame for his painting Heart of the Andes, now on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Church displayed this photo at a Salon in NY, where is was kept behind curtains. People were awe-struck when it was unveiled. They waited in line to pay admission just to get a glimpse of an exotic locale like this. Remember this was painted in a time before photography and travel was impractical or impossible./ artist

Flowers at Olana

Church was one of the greatest landscape artists, and built his mansion in Olana, on the banks of the Hudson. He designed everything, and this is a flower at his outdoor garden.

Woodstock Artist

A musician at the Flea Market. His beret, glasses and hair are unique and distinctive, and he is yet another of the many colorful characters at Woodstock. /people

Woodstock, NY

Symmetry is good. Broken symmetry even better. The leaning stop sign and telephone pole create a mood of instability, decay, and movement.

Woodstock

Contradictions exist everywhere, if we can only see them. A gorgeous rustic scene, autumnal and enchanting, with a wooden barn and waterfall in the distance, is seemingly disturbed by the incongruence of an ugly sign declaring No Parking at Any Time.

Daisies

Sometimes when shooting flowers it is better not to get too close. The group may work together. Keep in mind the backdrop. The painted orange wall nicely reflects the tones and hues of the flowers.

Madison Square

Midtown October 2010-4, originally uploaded by lionheart613.
The black and white conversion lends a 1930's effect to the Art Deco architectural structures near Madison Square. There is a relation between the two objects, the circular forms of the clocks and the verticality of the architecture working in unison. /new york

Madison Square Park

Midtown October 2010-5, originally uploaded by lionheart613.
It is dark, near 7 pm. As I walk home to Penn Station, I decide to take one more photo. I lower the ISO, keeping exposure good, which essentially lengthens the duration of the capture. Ideally, a picture like this should be on tripod, to prevent substantial hand shake. But here, the clean curving lines of traffic light motion contrast in an interesting way to the curly swiggles of handheld blur. I love the upper thick blue line, which represents the ghost of a passing bus. It is good to experiment, to push the limits, and to attempt to forward the creative process. /New York

Light at End of Tunnel

subway oct October 2010-3, originally uploaded by lionheart613.
Shooting in the subway poses many obstacles. The ISO must be raised, and an eye must be kept on approaching trains, especially when near the edge of the platform. In this picture, I wanted to capture the train as it entered the station but snapped a moment early - truly another "happy accident". The light is eerie in quality, especially in black and white, and I love the way the rails glisten. Anticipation is often better than reality. This is the critical moment, a second before our expectations are realized. /New york

Hispanic Day Parade

A child's profile. Neon green hues in the clothing are repeated in the eye shadow and earrings. The hand, and nearby child wearing green, who is blurred, together with the hat in the upper corner, create a beautiful frame for the face./New York

John Singer Sargent - Madame X

IMG_1599, originally uploaded by lionheart613.
Metropolitan Museum of Art - The infamous Madame X - the model was an American expatriate who married a banker. Sargent wrote to a friend " I have a great desire to paint her portrait and have reason to think she would allow it and is waiting for someone to propose this homage to her beauty. If you are 'bien avec elle' and will see her in Paris, you might tell her I am a man of prodigious talent." A remarkable portrait it is -  profile pose, unnaturally pale upper class skin, very tight waste. The dress reveals much, her attitude haughty, her flesh tones sensual and erotic. Scandal erupted when he displayed the portrait in Paris.. Later, Sargent overpainted the shoulder strap to make it look more secure, but to no avail, the damage to his reputation in France was done. A scandalous work at the time, it is remarkable at how far society's ability to be shocked has changed in the past century. I suspect Sargent had an affair with this mysterious and beautiful woman. /artist

Pierre-Auguste Renoir - Portrait of a Girl

IMG_1624, originally uploaded by lionheart613.
Metropolitan Museum of Art- I love Renoir's soft ethereal brushstrokes. His palette is full of colors. Creamy flesh tones have mixtures of greens and blues. His women are Rubenesque and fleshy, his oranges remind me of Titian. The impressionistic background is reminiscent of Monet and his series of poplar trees. He gained acclaim when some works were exhibited in the impressionist Exhibition of 1874. He was colleague of Monet, and worked with Delacroix in Algeria. We can see all these influences in this small work. He also travelled to Spain to see Velasquez's works and to Italy to behold those of Raphael. In later life he developed rheumatoid arthritis, yet persevered. /artist

Model with Graffiti

Elle 200807120001-2, originally uploaded by lionheart613.

In this take, the model wears a red dress, and is contrasted against the side of a truck covered with graffiti. Though busy, the background art does not distract, as it is fairly monochromatic. In fact, the sinuous curves echo and compliment the models form. Repeating forms help to emphasize and highlight features and lend interest to the overall composition. In art and photography, the artist should pay attention to forms, colors and line. Always direct the gaze to the peripheral margins. Does the background work?

Simple colors, simple dress, and harmonious contrapposto pose. Here, the weight is shifted to one leg, and the hips are at different levels. The Greek classical sculptors loved this pose, as did Michelangelo, his David, for example.

Reflections in a Window - Korea

Three elder women inspect some item in a fish market. Although our view is partially obscured, and we have the vantage point of the voyeur, we can nevertheless read their thoughts - the intense scrutiny, curiosity and more. Reflections are always remarkable to me, as multiple images are projected at once, with overlapping meanings and story subtexts. /travel

South Korean Youth

south korea march 2009-5, originally uploaded by lionheart613.
Contrasts of any sort are particularly compelling. The youth and moderness of the young men is in contrast to the timelessness of the historic village they are part of. The left most figure almost emerges from the frame, creating a strong and powerful visual dynamic. The principles of painting and photography are the same. Diagonals build drama and power. /travel

Korean Folk Village

People: A portrait which includes the surroundings is known as an environmental portrait. It conveys much information and interest. Soft even toned lighting, and the monochromatic background keep us focused on the main figure, a strong yet unassuming woman. Her direct gaze speaks to us on many levels.

In a historic restoration village, a merchant sells his butcher knives. He may have been a noble warrior, the leader of his tribe or an elder of great and profound wisdoms.

South Korea - A Clown

south korea march 2009-944, originally uploaded by lionheart613.
This picture is enigmatic and full of contradictions. A clown's face is full of color, mimicking the brightly painted chairs and backdrop. Clowns are supposed to be happy. Is he happy or sad?
