New York
I invite you to embark on an ongoing photographic odyssey - one of exotic locales, colorful characters, strange customs and untold adventures. Not to be overshadowed, New York City, a microcosm of the world, pulsates with art, fashion and culture, with surprises and contradictions all its own. Long Island beckons too, from North Fork vineyards to South Shore beaches. I hope my paintings and photos inspire and inform. Church gained fame for his painting Heart of the Andes, now on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Church displayed this photo at a Salon in NY, where is was kept behind curtains. People were awe-struck when it was unveiled. They waited in line to pay admission just to get a glimpse of an exotic locale like this. Remember this was painted in a time before photography and travel was impractical or impossible./ artist
Flowers at Olana
Church was one of the greatest landscape artists, and built his mansion in Olana, on the banks of the Hudson. He designed everything, and this is a flower at his outdoor garden.

Contradictions exist everywhere, if we can only see them. A gorgeous rustic scene, autumnal and enchanting, with a wooden barn and waterfall in the distance, is seemingly disturbed by the incongruence of an ugly sign declaring No Parking at Any Time.
Daisies
Sometimes when shooting flowers it is better not to get too close. The group may work together. Keep in mind the backdrop. The painted orange wall nicely reflects the tones and hues of the flowers.

A solid black background and subtle lighting can create a very powerful portrait. No distracting elements exist and a psychological effect is achieved. /people

Environmental, or on-location photoshoots are fun. Look around. Be creative. Use the structures in the setting . The models lines are mimicked and accentuated by the strong architectural horizontals and diagonals. / fashion

Shooting upward at a model creates an imposing presence. The twilight background, and the rooftop setting, create a gradation of lighting and shadow effects. / fashion

Model with Graffiti
In this take, the model wears a red dress, and is contrasted against the side of a truck covered with graffiti. Though busy, the background art does not distract, as it is fairly monochromatic. In fact, the sinuous curves echo and compliment the models form. Repeating forms help to emphasize and highlight features and lend interest to the overall composition. In art and photography, the artist should pay attention to forms, colors and line. Always direct the gaze to the peripheral margins. Does the background work?

Simple colors, simple dress, and harmonious contrapposto pose. Here, the weight is shifted to one leg, and the hips are at different levels. The Greek classical sculptors loved this pose, as did Michelangelo, his David, for example.

The iridiscent colors, blues and greens against the silvery bodypaint evokes a peacock in full plumage. The New York parade is one of my favorites of the year.

At Pridefest 2010, a beautiful Thai ladyboy poses for the camera. I used subtle fill flash to overcome the harsher midday shadows. The simple red backdrop creates a very effective frame and silhouettes the face. /people/events

At a temple in Seoul, school children show respect to a Buddha. Repetitive forms, colors, movements and actions creates a soothing and visually compelling work. Note the one boy who is gazing forward. A break in symmetry is always unexpected and can create drama and tension.
